Ingredients

Main Ingredients
  • 6 Mini onions The smaller, the better.
  • 1 cup buttermilk Or use dairy-free milk + 1 tbsp vinegar as a substitute.
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour Whole wheat flour also works.
  • 1 tsp paprika For flavor.
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp onion powder
  • 1/2 tsp cayenne pepper Adjust based on heat preference.
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • Cooking spray For crisping.

Method

Preparation
  1. Trim off the top of the mini onions while keeping the root end intact, and make four evenly spaced cuts down toward the bulb without slicing all the way through.
  2. Soak the onions in buttermilk for about 30 minutes to enhance flavor and help the flour coating stick.
  3. While the onions are soaking, mix the flour, paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, cayenne pepper, salt, and black pepper in a bowl.
  4. After soaking, dip each onion in the flour mixture, pulling apart the petals slightly to coat all nooks and crannies. Shake off excess flour.
  5. Spray the onions lightly with cooking spray and preheat your air fryer to 375°F (190°C).
Cooking
  1. Arrange the mini onions in a single layer in the air fryer and air fry for about 10-15 minutes, or until crispy and beautifully browned, shaking them halfway through.
  2. Once done, let them cool slightly before serving.
