Ingredients
  

For the crust and topping
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened Butter should be at room temperature.
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
For the apple filling
  • 4 cups peeled and sliced apples (about 4 to 5 medium apples) Substitute with a mix of favorite fruits if desired.
  • 3/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch For thickening.

Method
 

Preparation
  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. In a mixing bowl, cream the softened butter and granulated sugar until fluffy, about 4-5 minutes.
  3. Gradually mix in the flour and salt until just combined, followed by the vanilla extract.
  4. Press about two-thirds of the dough into the bottom of a greased 9x13-inch baking pan to form an even layer.
Apple Filling
  1. In a separate bowl, toss the sliced apples with brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, lemon juice, and cornstarch until evenly coated.
  2. Spread the apple filling over the crust evenly.
Topping and Baking
  1. Crumble the remaining dough over the top of the apple filling.
  2. Bake for 30-35 minutes, until the topping is set and lightly golden and the apples are bubbling.
  3. Allow the bars to cool completely before cutting into squares, ideally letting them cool for at least an hour.
