Ingredients

Pasta and Sauce
  • 12 ounces spaghetti (or your favorite pasta)
  • 1 jar 24 ounces of marinara sauce Use homemade or your favorite store-bought brand.
  • 1 pound ground beef or turkey Can substitute with lentils for a vegetarian version.
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning (or your favorite herbs)
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
Cheese Mixture
  • 1 cup ricotta cheese Cottage cheese works too.
  • 2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1 large egg
Optional Garnish
  • chopped fresh basil For garnish.

Method

Preparation
  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil and cook the spaghetti according to package instructions, reserving about a cup of pasta water before draining.
  3. In a large skillet over medium heat, brown the ground beef or turkey.
  4. Add minced garlic, Italian seasoning, and a pinch of salt and pepper, allowing the flavors to meld together.
  5. Once the meat is fully cooked, pour in the marinara sauce and stir well. Let it simmer gently for about 5-7 minutes.
Cheese Mixture Preparation
  1. In a separate bowl, mix the ricotta cheese, egg, and half of the Parmesan cheese.
Assembly and Baking
  1. Add the drained spaghetti to the skillet with the meat sauce, mixing well to coat each piece of pasta. Add a splash of reserved pasta water if it seems dry.
  2. In a greased baking dish, spread half of the spaghetti mixture evenly. Dollop half of the ricotta mixture over the top and sprinkle with a cup of mozzarella cheese.
  3. Repeat the layers with the remaining spaghetti, ricotta, and finish with the rest of the mozzarella and Parmesan.
  4. Cover the dish with aluminum foil and bake for about 20 minutes. Then remove the foil and bake for another 15-20 minutes until the cheese is bubbly and golden.
