Ingredients

For the Tempeh
  • 8 oz tempeh, sliced into half-inch thick strips
For the Marinade
  • 1 cup BBQ sauce (store-bought or homemade)
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • ½ teaspoon cayenne pepper (optional for heat)
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
For Garnish
  • Fresh parsley, for garnish (optional)

Method

Preparation
  1. Bring a small pot of water to a simmer and add the sliced tempeh. Simmer for about 10 minutes to eliminate bitterness.
  2. Drain the tempeh and pat dry with a kitchen towel.
  3. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the olive oil, smoked paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, cayenne pepper, salt, and pepper.
  4. Toss the tempeh strips in the marinade until thoroughly coated and let sit for at least 15 minutes.
Cooking
  1. Preheat your grill or grill pan over medium heat.
  2. Lay the tempeh strips directly on the grill and cook for about 4-5 minutes until they develop a char.
  3. Flip the strips, brush with BBQ sauce, and grill for an additional 4-5 minutes.
  4. Remove from heat and let rest. Brush with more BBQ sauce before serving if desired.

Notes

Use seitan for a different texture or gluten-free BBQ sauce if needed. You can marinate the tempeh overnight for deeper flavor. Consider adding liquid smoke to enhance smokiness.
