Ingredients

Main Ingredients
  • 6 cups day-old bread, cubed Brioche or challah are especially recommended.
  • 2 cups milk Whole milk adds richness; almond or oat milk can be used as substitutes.
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1 cup granulated sugar Brown sugar can be used for depth of flavor.
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon Nutmeg or cardamom can be added for extra warmth.
  • 1 pinch salt
  • 1 cup optional add-ins (raisins, nuts, or chocolate chips) For added texture and flavor.

Method

Preparation
  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together the milk, eggs, sugar, vanilla, cinnamon, and salt until well combined.
  3. Add the bread cubes to the mixture, ensuring each piece is thoroughly soaked.
  4. Let the mixture sit for about 15 minutes to allow the bread to absorb the custard.
  5. Transfer the mixture into a greased baking dish and spread it evenly.
  6. If desired, sprinkle a little extra cinnamon or sugar on top before baking.
  7. Bake in the preheated oven for about 45-55 minutes, looking for a golden top and slightly puffed-up center.

Notes

Bread pudding is great served warm or chilled. Try with warm caramel sauce, vanilla ice cream, or a vibrant berry compote. It also pairs well with coffee or tea.
