  • 4 cups crumbled cornbread (homemade or store-bought)
  • 1 cup diced onion (yellow or white)
  • 1 cup diced celery
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter or vegan butter for a plant-based option
  • 2 cups chicken or vegetable broth homemade is best; low-sodium is recommended
  • 2 large eggs or flaxseed meal mixed with water for vegan option
  • 1 tablespoon rubbed sage fresh sage can enhance flavor
  • 1 teaspoon dried thyme
  • Salt and pepper to taste
Optional Ingredients
  • 1 cup cooked and crumbled sausage adds an extra layer of flavor
  • 1/2 cup chopped pecans or walnuts for added crunch
  • 1 cup dried cranberries for a hint of sweetness

Method
 

Preparation
  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Melt the butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the diced onion and celery, letting them soften for about 5 to 7 minutes.
  3. In a large mixing bowl, combine the crumbled cornbread with the sautéed onions, celery, and any optional add-ins.
  4. Add the sage, thyme, salt, and pepper, mixing gently.
  5. In a separate bowl, whisk together the eggs and broth until well combined. Pour over the cornbread mixture and fold until moistened.
  6. Transfer the dressing to a greased 9x13-inch baking dish.
Baking
  1. Bake in the preheated oven for about 30 to 40 minutes, until the top is golden brown and crispy but the inside remains tender.
