Ingredients

Main Ingredients
  • 4 large large egg yolks
  • 0.5 cup granulated sugar
  • 2.5 cups whole milk
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 0.75 cup bourbon or rum (optional) Optional for a non-alcoholic version.
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 0.5 teaspoon ground nutmeg Plus extra for garnish.
  • 1 pinch salt

Method

Preparation
  1. Whisk the egg yolks and sugar together in a large bowl until the mixture turns pale and thick.
  2. In a saucepan over medium heat, combine the milk and cream, stirring occasionally until warm but not boiling.
  3. Gradually pour the warm milk mixture into the egg yolk mixture while constantly whisking to prevent scrambling.
  4. Transfer the mixture back into the saucepan and whisk continuously until thickened, about 5-8 minutes.
  5. Remove from heat and stir in the bourbon, vanilla extract, nutmeg, and a pinch of salt.
  6. Allow cooling before refrigerating for at least an hour.
Serving
  1. Pour the chilled eggnog into glasses and garnish with a sprinkle of nutmeg.
  2. Serve in elegant glasses, optionally pair it with freshly baked cookies or a slice of pie.
