Preparation
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease two 9-inch round cake pans.
- In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt until combined.
- Add in the eggs, milk, vegetable oil, and vanilla extract. Mix on medium speed for about two minutes.
- Gently stir in the boiling water until fully incorporated. The batter will be thin.
- Divide the batter evenly between the prepared pans, and bake for 30 to 35 minutes.
- Let the cakes cool in the pans for about 10 minutes, then transfer them to wire racks to cool completely.
Frosting
- Melt the semi-sweet chocolate and allow it to cool slightly.
- In a large bowl, beat the heavy cream until soft peaks form, gradually adding in the powdered sugar.
- Fold in the melted chocolate until combined and smooth.
Assembly
- Place one layer of the cooled cake on a serving plate and spread frosting on top.
- Add the second layer and frost the top and sides of the cake.
- Optionally, add chocolate shavings or sprinkles on top.
