Ingredients

Dry Ingredients
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg optional but recommended
Wet Ingredients
  • 1/2 cup buttermilk (or milk with a splash of vinegar)
  • 2 large eggs
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter melted
Frying
  • Oil for frying vegetable or canola oil

Method

Preparation
  1. Prepare your workspace and heat the oil in a deep pan over medium heat.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together the dry ingredients: flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, salt, and nutmeg.
  3. In a separate bowl, combine the wet ingredients: buttermilk, eggs, and melted butter.
  4. Make a well in the center of the dry mix and pour in the wet ingredients, gently folding them together until just combined. Avoid overmixing; it's okay if there are a few lumps.
  5. Lightly flour your surface and turn the dough out. Roll it to about 1/2-inch thickness and cut out doughnuts using a doughnut cutter or two different-sized round cutters.
Cooking
  1. Gently place each doughnut into the hot oil, frying for about 2-3 minutes on each side until golden brown.
  2. Remove them from the oil and place on paper towels to drain.
  3. Optionally, roll the warm doughnuts in granulated sugar or glaze them with your favorite icing.

Notes

Feel free to experiment with flavors by adding chocolate chips or using different glazes. For a dairy-free option, substitute buttermilk with almond milk and use applesauce in place of butter. Store leftovers in an airtight container for up to two days at room temperature or in the fridge for about a week. The dough can be frozen for up to 3 months but should be thawed overnight before frying.
