Ingredients

Doughnut Ingredients
  • 2.5 cups all-purpose flour, plus more for dusting
  • 0.25 cups granulated sugar
  • 2.5 teaspoons baking powder
  • 0.5 teaspoons nutmeg (optional, but recommended)
  • 0.5 teaspoons salt
  • 0.5 cups whole milk Can substitute with almond milk for dairy-free option
  • 2 large eggs Can substitute with flaxseed meal mixed with water for vegan option
  • 0.25 cups unsalted butter, melted Can substitute with plant-based butter alternatives
  • Vegetable oil (for frying) Vegetable or canola oil recommended
Glaze Ingredients
  • 1.5 cups powdered sugar
  • 3 tablespoons milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Method

Preparation
  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, sugar, baking powder, nutmeg, and salt. Whisk until no lumps remain.
  2. In another bowl, beat the eggs and mix with the milk and melted butter until smooth.
  3. Gradually add wet ingredients to the dry ingredients. Stir until just combined, being careful not to overmix.
  4. Cover the dough with a clean kitchen towel and let it rest for about 10 minutes.
Rolling and Frying
  1. Roll out the dough on a floured surface to about 1/2 inch thickness.
  2. Use a round cutter to cut out circles and a smaller cutter for the holes.
  3. Heat vegetable oil in a deep pot to 350°F (175°C).
  4. Carefully drop in a few doughnuts at a time, frying until golden brown, about 1-2 minutes on each side.
  5. Use a slotted spoon to transfer them to a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil.
Glazing
  1. In a bowl, whisk together powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla.
  2. Dip the warm doughnuts into the glaze and place on a wire rack to set.

For a unique twist, try topping the doughnuts with sprinkles, chocolate glaze, or filling them with jam. Doughnuts can also be served alongside fruity dishes like strawberry shortcake.
