Preparation
- Rinse the rice under cold water until the water runs almost clear to wash away excess starch.
Cooking
- In a medium saucepan, combine the rinsed rice, water (or broth), a pinch of salt, and olive oil or butter. Stir gently.
- Bring the mixture to a boil over medium-high heat, watching carefully to prevent boiling over.
- Once boiling, reduce the heat to a simmer and cover the pan with a tight-fitting lid. Do not lift the lid while cooking.
- Set a timer for 15-18 minutes. The water should be absorbed and the rice looking fluffy.
- After the timer goes off, turn off the heat and let the rice sit for about 5 minutes, undisturbed.
- Fluff the rice with a fork to separate the grains.

For a nutty profile, try toasting the rice in a pan before adding water. This recipe is also vegan-friendly if you skip the butter. Cook a big batch of rice ahead of time, as it keeps well in the fridge for up to a week.
