Ingredients

Main Ingredients
  • 1 cup long-grain white rice (basmati or jasmine) Choose basmati or jasmine for extra flavor.
  • 2 cups water (or low-sodium vegetable or chicken broth) Broth can enhance flavor.
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil or butter Optional for a richer taste.
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt Adjust to taste.

Method

Preparation
  1. Rinse the rice under cold water until the water runs almost clear to wash away excess starch.
Cooking
  1. In a medium saucepan, combine the rinsed rice, water (or broth), a pinch of salt, and olive oil or butter. Stir gently.
  2. Bring the mixture to a boil over medium-high heat, watching carefully to prevent boiling over.
  3. Once boiling, reduce the heat to a simmer and cover the pan with a tight-fitting lid. Do not lift the lid while cooking.
  4. Set a timer for 15-18 minutes. The water should be absorbed and the rice looking fluffy.
  5. After the timer goes off, turn off the heat and let the rice sit for about 5 minutes, undisturbed.
  6. Fluff the rice with a fork to separate the grains.

Notes

For a nutty profile, try toasting the rice in a pan before adding water. This recipe is also vegan-friendly if you skip the butter. Cook a big batch of rice ahead of time, as it keeps well in the fridge for up to a week.
