Ingredients

For the choux pastry
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, cubed
  • 1 cup water
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
For the filling
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 2 tablespoons powdered sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
For the chocolate sauce
  • 1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream

Method

Preparation of Choux Pastry
  1. Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. In a medium saucepan, combine the water, butter, and salt. Heat over medium heat until the butter is melted and the mixture comes to a gentle boil.
  3. Remove from heat and add the flour all at once, stirring quickly with a wooden spoon.
  4. Return to low heat and keep stirring until the mixture forms a ball and pulls away from the sides of the pan.
  5. Allow the dough to cool slightly before incorporating the eggs. Add eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition until the dough is smooth and glossy.
  6. Transfer the dough to a piping bag fitted with a large round tip. Pipe small mounds onto the baking sheet, leaving space between them.
  7. Bake for about 15-20 minutes, until golden brown and hollow inside.
Filling the Profiteroles
  1. In a mixing bowl, whip the heavy cream, powdered sugar, and vanilla extract until soft peaks form.
  2. Once the puffs are cool, use a sharp knife to create a small slit on the side of each puff and pipe in the whipped cream.
Preparing the Chocolate Sauce
  1. In a saucepan over low heat, combine chocolate chips and heavy cream, stirring until smooth and creamy.
  2. Drizzle the warm chocolate sauce generously over the filled profiteroles.

Notes

These profiteroles can be served with powdered sugar, vanilla ice cream, or alongside a fruity sorbet for a refreshing complement. Customize flavors with orange zest or almond extract in the whipped cream. For a vegan version, substitute eggs with aquafaba and use coconut cream.
