Ingredients

Main Ingredients
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour (plus more for kneading) Can substitute half with whole wheat flour.
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 1 packet active dry yeast (2 and 1/4 teaspoons) Ensure yeast is fresh.
  • 1.5 teaspoons salt
  • 1 cup warm milk (about 110°F) Use a thermometer for accuracy.
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted For brushing, additional melted butter can be used.
  • 1 large egg (room temperature) Substitute with flax egg for vegan option.

Method

Preparation
  1. Mix warm milk, sugar, and yeast in a bowl and let sit for 5-10 minutes until bubbly.
  2. In a larger mixing bowl, whisk together the flour and salt. Then, add the yeast mixture, melted butter, and the egg to the bowl.
  3. Stir with a wooden spoon until the dough starts to come together.
  4. Turn dough onto a floured surface and knead for about 8 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  5. Shape the dough into a ball and place it in a greased bowl. Cover with a clean kitchen towel and let rise in a warm spot for about an hour until doubled in size.
Baking
  1. Punch down the risen dough to release air, then divide into 12 equal pieces and roll each into a ball.
  2. Place rolls in a greased baking dish, cover, and let rise for another 30 minutes.
  3. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C) and bake rolls for 20-25 minutes until golden brown.
  4. Optionally, brush the tops with melted butter when taken out of the oven.
