Ingredients

Dough Ingredients
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 packet instant yeast (2 1/4 teaspoons)
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1 1/2 cups warm water (110°F or 43°C)
Boiling and Topping
  • 1/4 cup baking soda For boiling the pretzels
  • 1 large egg For egg wash
  • Coarse sea salt For sprinkling on top

Method

Preparation
  1. Combine the flour, yeast, salt, and sugar in a large mixing bowl and stir until well mixed.
  2. Pour warm water into the mixture and combine using hands or a wooden spoon until a dough begins to form.
  3. Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 5 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  4. Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl, cover with a clean cloth, and let rise in a warm place for about 1 hour or until doubled in size.
Cooking
  1. Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C).
  2. Punch down the risen dough and divide it into 8 equal pieces.
  3. Roll each piece into a rope about 24 inches long and twist into a classic pretzel shape.
  4. In a saucepan, bring about 10 cups of water to a boil and carefully add the baking soda.
  5. Boil each pretzel for about 30 seconds, then remove and place on a parchment-lined baking sheet.
  6. Whisk the egg and brush it over each pretzel before sprinkling coarse sea salt on top.
  7. Bake for 12-15 minutes, or until golden brown.

Notes

For a gluten-free option, use a gluten-free all-purpose flour blend. For a vegan version, replace the egg wash with a mixture of almond milk and maple syrup. Try adding seasonings or filling the pretzels with cheese or chocolate for extra flavor.
