For the Strawberry Topping
  • 2 cups fresh strawberries, hulled and halved
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
For the Cake
  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup buttermilk (or milk with 1 teaspoon of vinegar mixed in)

Method

Preparation
  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. In a mixing bowl, combine the melted butter and brown sugar to create a rich base for your strawberries.
  3. Pour this mixture into your greased round baking pan, spreading it evenly across the bottom.
  4. Top with the halved strawberries, cut side down, ensuring they cover the whole pan.
Baking
  1. In another bowl, mix together the flour, granulated sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt until well combined.
  2. Add the softened butter, eggs, vanilla extract, and buttermilk into the dry mixture and beat the batter using an electric mixer at medium speed until smooth and creamy for about 2 minutes.
  3. Pour the batter over the strawberry topping in the pan, gently spreading it out with a spatula.
  4. Bake for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  5. Once baked, let it cool for about 10 minutes before inverting the cake onto a serving platter.
